Age Concern 'Pop-in'
The Age Concern group in Walkington was set up with support from the Hayride committee and from a slow start now has anything from 60-70 people attending the weekly 'Pop-in'. Everyone is welcome between 10 and 12 noon on a Thursday for a cup of coffee, a gossip and a good laugh.
The Annual General Meeting of the group was held in the Committee Room of the Village Hall on Tuesday 22 April with 13 members of the Committee attending. The Chair, Mr David Drew, welcomed members and reported another successful year for the group with a membership of 80 of whom 50/60 regularly attend the weekly “Pop-In” on a Thursday morning. Unfortunately, five of our long term members died during the year – all will be missed.
The Treasurer reported funds remain at a stable level showing a small increase from last year. Bingo and Keep-fit sessions on Monday and Tuesday afternoons respectively continue to thrive. A number of coach outings were arranged during the year in accordance with members’ wishes. A coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Nurses in September raised £204.
Christmas was once again a busy period starting with the coffee morning in November, the party in December and finishing with the annual Christmas Lunch at the Ferguson Fawcitt in January. Two resignations were received – Mr E Teal from the Committee and Mr E Anderton as Auditor. Both were thanked for their service.
The Officers and Committee members all agreed to serve for a further year and were re-elected “en-bloc”. In conclusion, the Chairman, on behalf of the members, thanked all the Volunteers who give their time and effort in making the Walkington “Pop-In” the success that it is.

We are in urgent need of help!!
The Pop-In meets every Thursday in the Village Hall. Anything from 40-60 plus members attend and for some of them this is one of the social highlights of their week. The men who help to run the Club are getting a bit long in the tooth and would appreciate help in setting up and putting away the tables and chairs.
We are looking for active people who for example may have just retired and would like to do something to help the village. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to set up and the same time to put them away. You never know, you might be interested in
our activities and may wish to join the gang!
Loneliness and lack of social opportunities are some of the causes of mental and physical ill health in the elderly. The bus trips, the keep fit, the bingo and other activities are a vital part of keeping our old folks healthy. You can be a part of this by giving us your time. Don’t be shy, come and see us on a Thursday morning and have a chat. I promise you, you will not regret it. You know helping others is the best way to help yourself.

Funds are raised through folk concerts, the car boot sales and the stall at the Christmas Fayre in the Village Hall.
Why not pop-in, you will be most welcome
What Happens
Members claim to have the biggest scandal circle in the village and enjoy themselves with their coach trips to Whitby and other places in the summer. In the winter months there is bingo and whist on alternate Monday's and the Christmas dinner has become an annual date in the village calendar.
Our bingo sessions by popular demand will now be held every Monday afternoon In the Village Hall at 2pm. Everyone will be welcome as the flowers in May. A mere 50p and for that you will be in friendly company, eight games of bingo! With a nice cup of tea and biscuits at the half time served by truly charming waitress with a kindly smile for all and sundry.
Excellent prizes gathered and chosen by Barbara, Vera, Phyliss. Our professional callers are widely known for their sparkling humour and clarity. The ever popular big he arted lad is the national runner up for the title of the best caller out in Britain. Our other caller is in such great demand by huge bingo halls in Hull. We are lucky beyond belief to get him to our humble session.
Please! Come and join the fun.
Getting Involved
It is not necessary to belong the "Pop-In" to join in other activities. For more details contact Di Thomson (862496) or call in on Thursday morning to collect a copy of the programme.
For those who cannot walk to the club, there is a taxi service and members visit each other when sick in hospital or at home or simply to sit with ill or lonely people for a few hours a week to keep them company.
