Do you have ancestors from Walkington?
Since the publication of the Millennium Newsletter and Bronwen's Molecatcher's story I have had a number of requests for help in finding ancestors who lived in Walkington. I regret that I do not have time to investigate on anyone's behalf but I am happy to include contact details and requests here. If any local residents are able to help then please contact the enquirers.

I am trying to find information about John Stather, born c1780 in Walkington (as on 1851 census). He married Elizabeth ? and they lived at Beverley, Cherry Burton, Seaton Ross. I have found details of several children with these place names on their birth details. I know that he was a shoemaker (cordwainer). He was my gggg grandfather. Can anyone help me find any information about him? Thankyou

I have a great Uncle (Wilfred Bird) known as Freddie or Fred who lived in Walkington(born 1902, Cherry Burton). He is the last brother of my grandfather whom I cannot trace.  My late mother thinks he married an Alice but cannot remember any names of children.  My sister remembers visiting Wilfred with our grandfather as a child (late 50's, early 60's).  If there is anyone who may know of any Birds still living in Walkington, or of anyone who may be a descendant of Wilfred and Alice, would you please contact me.  Most of the family were living in and around Cherry Burton and Bishop Burton. Denise Torney

I am trying to trace my father's family history as I am creating a family tree. His name was Fred Gilbank - father Arthur Gilbank - Mother Mary J Bowser.  Fred was born 1903 in Walkington. I am interested to know if there are any Gilbank relations still living in Walkington.  Regards Margaret Gardiner (nee Gilbank)

This is very old, a quarter of a millenium ago.  Robert Webster is reported as having been appointed curate at Walkington in September 1757.  I was hoping that anyone with an interest in the church's history and its records might keep an eye out for any mention of Robert Webster.  There were Websters in Beverley and in Hull so I don't think he came from very far away.  Bill Webster.

I come from the Ashton family that you mention [in the 1920's history]. My great grandmother was Martha Jane Ashton the sister of Louis Ashton and her father was Thomas Ashton. Martha was the cook/domestic for the Fawsitt family on the 1901 census and her sister Beatice Ellen also worked there at this time.

If anyone has any other stories about my family please email them to me, as it would mean a lot to me.  Marilyn Storr.

I'm trying to locate my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather who I believed lived in Walkington. His name was William Martin a Publican, his son John Brandham Martin was a Miller who in 1842 married a Eliza Dickinson of Wednesday Market in Beverley.

John was resident in Walkington at that time and moved to Cottingham. Diane Ward

I saw on your site reference to the Waudby Trust in Walkington, I wonder if my mother's family Waudby's are somehow connected as the name is very unusual and all Waudby's seem to originate from either South Cave or Cottingham or that general area. My family starts with Samuel Waudby, born circa 1773 in Cottingham. He married Martha Pilkington in 1798 in Eastgate Lincolnshire. She is the daughter of Richard Pilkington and Catherine Hoe. I would like to hear from any Waudby's from this area. Thank you, John Field Adrian, Michigan.

We have been researching my wife's Bailey family of Walkington and have managed to trace the line back to a marriage in Bishop Burton in 1796. We are looking for photographs and information about Harold and Ernest Bailey as well as anybody connected with them. We are particularly interested in:

  • Edward and Sarah from Littlewood Farm
  • Elizabeth and John Boynton, Blacksmith
  • Tom Bailey
  • Mabel and Disraeli Gardham
  • Henry Victor Bennison and Emma, joiner in Northgate.

If anyone has any photos or material that we could copy, we would collect and return it as quickly as possible. Graham & Anne Beaumont

Taylor 1 - I would like to find some history about my husband's ancestors, the Taylor family from Walkington. His great-grandfather came to the U.S., date unknown. George W. Taylor was born in Walkington in the year 1810. We have information about the family here, but very little before he arrived in the U.S. We know he had two brothers Thomas and Ralph. Can anyone put me in touch with anyone from this Taylor family? Deanna Taylor

Taylor 2 - I am seeking information about the family of my ggg grandfather Ralph TAYLOR (married to Elizabeth JOHNSON in 1793 in Walkington). Some of their children were George (b. 1810), Ralph, Thomas, True, Elizabeth, Johnson, John, and William. Thomas, the younger Ralph, and George came to the United States approximately 1828-1832 and settled in Sherman Twp., St. Joseph County, MI. I was pleasantly surprised to learn recently that these three came from a larger family in England. I would like to contact and exchange info with any TAYLOR/JOHNSON relatives still living in the area, or if anyone knows anything about the TAYLOR/JOHNSON family I would sincerely appreciate any information that you could share. Thank you. Twylia Voshol

I would be very interested in hearing from Ernie HOOD or any HOODs from Walkington as that is the place that my husband's HOOD ancestors came from. Just returned from a vacation in York pursuing our family tree. Thanks, Janet Lovegrove

A John Suggit, who was married to Susannah Tindal in 1795, was the inn keeper for a pub called the Wheat Sheaf in Walkington, according to the White Directory or perhaps Pigots directory in 1830. They had a son called Tindall Suggit born about 1812. Tindall was a Joiner in Walkington. His daughter was Susannah Suggit, born about 1849, in Beverley. She married Thomas Spenceley Coverdale. She was my Great Grandmother. I am trying to find out more about the Wheat Sheaf and the Suggit and Tindal families. Does anyone out there have any info? Please contact me, thank you for your help Carole Materi, Canada.

Red House 1 - I am looking for any information about the Red House Walkington around 1940-1944. One of my relatives apparently died there. What was the Red House and are there any records that one can look at. Regards M Wadsworth

Red House 2 - My Great Grandfather died in The Red House but lived at the time in Withernsea. Christopher James Gallagher died on the 15th March 1935 in The Red House, Walkington. He was 66 years of age and lived at 44 Queen Street, North Withernsea. He was a U.D. Pensioned Petty Officer First Grade R.N. J.B. Parker Occupier of The Red House, Walkington Road was the informant which was a week later. Doreen Hardy (no relation to me it seems - Ed.)

Can anyone shed light on the history of the Red House and why people died there?

Is there anyone in the village who has access to Parish Records? My great-grandfather was John Dean, and he was born in Walkington around 1859. By 1901 he was groom for Richard Botterill at Tathwell Hall in Lincolnshire. Of his daughters the eldest, Lily was born in Beverley, while Ethel, Edith and Edwin had been born in Driffield. My guess is that he had been employed by Botterill, who was also from Yorkshire, and moved down to Lincolnshire with him. Confusingly, there is a John N. Dean listed in Walkington in 1901. He was aged 48, a labourer and had three children - Amy, Fred and Frank. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. My 'phone number is 01945 589869. Thank you - David Prestidge

Ridsdale 1 - My grandfather was from Walkington and had a grocery store until 1922 when he moved his family to Canada, ending up in Asquith Saskatchewan. His name was George Ridsdale and his wife was Alice, with children Harold, Gertrude, Fred, Olive and Dave ( my father who was born in Canada ) Any information on the Ridsdale's would be appreciated. Gary Ridsdale White Rock, BC

Ridsdale 2 - Could anyone help at all? We are trying to trace our great-great-grandfather & grandmother who lived in Walkington til around 1896 when they moved to Litte Weighton. They were called David & Mary Ellen Ridsdale. Many of the Ridsdale relatives are buried in All Hallows Graveyard but we cannot find any further details as to what happened to them in Walkington. Any info would be much appreciated. Sincerely J Pratt

I am researching into my family history (the Waslin(g) name) and saw that you had awarded a Tom Waslin cup [awarded to the under 14 boy scoring most points at the Sports]. I wondered if you could tell me how it came about and the history of the cup. Elaine (Wasling) Metcalf.

I have been researching my family history and have found several references to family members living in "Lawsons Yard" in the middle 19th century, I wondered if anyone knew where it is/was, I can't see it on any street plans or old maps. Does anyone know if their is a John Lawson buried 1878, in the churchyard? Nick Lawson, Little Driffield.

I am trying to trace my husbands ancestors William Johnson and Martha Teasdale. They were married at Walkington 26-11-1825 by Daniel Ferguson Rector. In the presence of John Ridsoule, Daniel Nicholson, William Northend Clerk. Their son Henry and his wife Ellen Marrison and young family migrated to Rockhampton Queensland on the Dacca in June 1887. My paternal grandmother's family originate from Walkington - The Holden Family. We date back many years. I have record of my grtgrtgrandfather's baptism at Walkington in 1827. We left the area for Canada in 1832. I have not had any luck as yet tracing a connection to my ancestor, John Holden's family in the area, but perhaps with continued perseverance that will come. e-mail Paul Rose, Guelph, Ontario, Canada

Does anyone have any more information on William Porteous mentioned on the website in respect of Broadgate hospital? My ancestors were from Beverley and I believe that William Porteous may have been related to my great-grandfather, Mark Porteous. - Lizzy
