Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association
The association split from the WI in 1983 with much sadness following dissatisfaction with some of the rules and regulations issued from London. The aims of the YCA are to preserve village life and values, to promote friendship, social activities and skills and interests of countrywomen; there are now 125 groups coving the three ridings of Yorkshire.
This year is the Silver Jubilee of the countrywomen, to commemorate this the Walkington branch has had a hanging basket put up at the village hall in the YCA colours which are blue and white.
Membership
We are always happy to welcome new members and as our village is getting larger, we are sure there must be ladies who would like to join us. We have heard that some don’t want to come out on a winter’s evening, so if you would like to try us out during the lighter nights and find you like us, we could try to arrange transport for the dark nights. If this idea suits you just come to the Village Hall, 2nd Wednesday in the month at 7.30. You never know, it could be the start of something good.
I have been told by members that some ladies in the village, who may be interested in joining us, think they are not eligible because they are not Yorkshire born, this is not so. Everyone is welcome, no matter where you originate from. I have also been asked to say that the loop system is working, so anyone with hearing difficulties will now be able to hear loud and clear.
The Walkington membership is 35 and the group meets in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm on every second Wednesday of the month.
