A very warm welcome to all our visitors, regular, occasional and 'first timers'.

To see a 'slide show' tour of the village and surrounding area, go to the About Us page, which also gives an update on current weather conditions in the area.

For those who may be researching their family history or simply have an interest in our village in times past, take a look at the History section of the site. This includes the Ancestors page, an opportunity for researchers to request help in tracing their forbears. Let us know if you can help or would like to add a request.

Village life in the East Riding 2011-2012

Firstly, some sad news - Ernie Teal MBE - founder of the Walkington Hayride and dedicated community champion  - passed away peacefully at his home on 28th November 2011, just a few days after his 92nd birthday.

Born in Beverley, Ernie and his wife Doris moved to Walkington shortly after the war and lived here ever since, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary last September.

Ernie served on the Parish Council for 46 years, many of them as its Chairman.

In addition to his tireless efforts on behalf of the local community and charitable causes Ernie was also widely known for his ability to communicate his love for (and knowledge about) the local countryside and its people. His column was a regular feature of the local newspaper while his voice was to be heard both on the local radio and also the Hull & District Talking Magazine for the Blind. Both columns and recordings continued to the end of his life - his final column, submitted only days before his death, was published as planned in the Saturday edition of the East Riding Mail, at the wish of his family.

As old age took its toll Ernie became a less regular sight around the village but the love and respect in which he was held never diminished, as evidenced by the huge turn-out for his funeral at All Hallows church on 8th December.

Margaret Berry wrote: Escorted to All Hallows by mounted police officers on their wonderful horses and the pealing of the Church bells, Ernie's coffin, draped in the Union flag, and topped with beautiful white flowers and a robin's nest wreath (from his great grand-children) was carried into a packed church for a very moving but uplifting service led by Canon Angela Bailey.

The voices of the congregation all but lifted off the roof of the church as everyone sang 'All Creatures of Our God and King'.

Also sung were the hymn 'I Vow to Thee my Country' and 'The Walkington Song'. These, together with appropriate readings, prayers and a eulogy by one of Ernie's grandchildren ensured that he was given the best of all possible 'send offs'.

Immediately after the service Ernie was interred close to the front door of the church, to rest for ever at the heart of the village he loved and served for so many years.

Odds and Ends

Village Quiz Season

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of this annual competition, in which village organisations compete against each other for a trophy and the honour of being the champions.

The season always ends with a 'celebrity' match in honour of the late Mike Scrowston, in which the Brains of Walkington play a team from University of Hull.

See the Quizzes page in the Social Groups section for dates, times etc.

Christmas Carols at the Pond

This year the carol services and visits of Father Christmas took place on Saturday 17th and Tuesday 20th December at 7.00pm.

As usual the steam organ which provides the music for the carols was there and Father Christmas appeared too. A collection was made each evening  by the Pond Committee, monies from which help to maintain the pond wild life and habitat throughout the year.

The Walkington Newsletter - 50 years young!

There was a special 50th anniversary edition of the Newsletter in May 2010: there are some surplus copies available (for a small charge) so contact us if you would like to have one.

The Walkington Newsletter has for 50 years been a vital source of local information as well as a way for everyone in the village to keep up to date with local events. It is entirely staffed by volunteers and distributed free of charge to every home in the village.

This website edition has for more than a decade provided an opportunity for regular updates about what is happening between issues of the Walkington Newsletter and also enables the many organisations within the village to give more information about their activities than would normally be possible. I am aware that some of these items are out of date. If organisation representatives wish to contact me with up-dated information I will be delighted to add it to their page or create a new page for them if they are not already represented here.

Pam Hardy (web editor)

Alan Hardy, who was the creator and original caretaker of this website, sadly passed away in September 2008.

The website goes on, so please continue to send village information in the usual way (see the Contact Us page).

This site is a new version which  supersedes the site that was developed over 6 or 7 years.  The 'Freeserve' site became limiting as time went on, with restrictions on the volume of content whereas this option brings everything together under one banner.

For the moment the original site remains at Walkington News.
