Walkington Victorian Haydays
Walkington Haydays News 2008
Thank you to EVERYONE involved with making our events so successful in June and especially to John & Carol Waterworth and the Clappison family for hosting the Barn Dance and Garden Party. The feedback from both these events has been very positive and the new garden party venue was enjoyed by everyone who attended.
As you know the number of events was reduced but still consisted of the Comedy performed by the Panto Players, the costume hire, the barn dance and garden party plus the picnic and cricket match held on the playing field which was not a fund raising event as such.
More than £6000 was raised and cheques were presented to representatives of our two charities, Dove House Hospice and Make a Wish Foundation, at a dinner at the 'Fergie' in November 2008. This is a wonderful amount and confirms the committee’s belief that it is vital we continue our efforts in holding events which make our village community so strong and uphold the tradition of the “Hayride”.
We always need new recruits to carry on with these traditions, to ensure that each year our calendars in June include the village events we have come to enjoy so much. Please watch for event dates in the newsletter or let us know that you would like to be involved by contacting Jan Freeman on 871749 or Maureen Fulton on 869912.
Garden Party 2007
What a great success the Haydays Garden Party was on Saturday 14th June. The weather was kind and the crowds thronged in there hundreds to enjoy the new venue, listen to music, watch the country dancing, play games and visit all the stalls.
The garden was a real treat and my sincere thanks go to Joyce Clappison and her family for allowing us to take over the whole garden for the day. My thanks also go to all the stall holders who committed themselves yet again to spending their time for the benefit and pleasure of others. Many thanks for all your help and support.
This years charities Dove House Hospice and Make a Wish Foundation also took a great part in helping with the event and we feel proud that we will be able to donate a significant sum to each of them as soon as we are aware of the final sum raised.

Hayride 2007 - Total amount Raised
I am delighted to announce that the total amount of money raised in our last Hayride year was £18,800 - a fantastic achievement and more than exceeded our expectations. A big thank you once again to everyone involved in helping to achieve this wonderful figure. This meant a cheque for £4,700 was given to each of the charities on the 17 November 2007.
There are many photos from the 2007 Hayride that have been put together on a DVD. You can buy prints or a DVD slideshow of the Hayride pictures via the photographer's website. Part of the DVD proceeds are donated back to the Hayride.
All for charity
In 2007 our very own Victorian Hayride reached its 40th year. Over the years the Hayride raised well in excess of a quarter of a million pounds for the local branches of many, many charities, an astonishing achievement for a village event. However,The Hayride committee took the sad decision that the 40th Walkington Victorian Hayride Parade would be the last.
In its 40th year, we were all sad to see the end, of what had become a village institution. Many people will miss the Hayride, not least those charities who have benefited from the proceeds over the years.
Remember, all the money raised has always been donated to the local branches of the charities we have supported, so there is every chance that someone close to any one of you has benefited from the Hayride effort.
In 2007 raised an absolutely amazing £18,800 for the local branches of our four most worthy charities:
Cystic Fibrosis Trust
Dove House Hospice- Yorkshire Cancer Research
- District Motor Neurone Society
